Makeup brand cuts ties with Alice Cooper over anti-trans comments

Renowned American rock star Alice Cooper has been cut ties with by Vampyre Cosmetics, a gothic makeup brand, due to the backlash his comments about the transgender community ignited.

Alice Cooper, known for his "shock rocker" image and theatrical performances that challenged gender norms, labeled gender-affirming care for children as a "troubling and risky trend." He went on to mock the trans rights movement, deeming it "ridiculous," and argued that allowing transgender individuals to use restrooms that correspond with their gender identity is a safety concern.

Vampyre Cosmetics swiftly ended their collaboration with the 75-year-old musician following these statements, as announced on their Instagram. The brand, which champions its ownership by women, disabled individuals, and LGBT+ members, affirmed its commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and equal access to healthcare.

Cooper, whose real name is Vincent Damon Furnier, had previously inked a deal with the makeup brand to release a line of products including mascara, lipsticks resembling microphones, and makeup palettes shaped like guitars and amplifiers.

Cooper is among a group of male musicians, including Ne-Yo, Carlos Santana, and Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley, who have recently faced criticism for controversial comments concerning transgender individuals.

In his interview with Stereogum, Cooper expressed concern about confusing young children by discussing gender identity at an early age and questioned the concept of "identifying" as anything one wants, even non-human entities like trees. He further criticized the inclusive language used in "woke" healthcare discussions, dismissed the trans-rights movement as comedic, and raised concerns about trans individuals using gender-aligned restrooms.

These remarks come at a time when trans youth are facing legislative challenges to accessing gender-affirming care in the United States, despite research supporting its positive impact on mental health. Cooper's statements also align with restrictive restroom policies in certain states, even though there is no evidence to support claims that transgender individuals pose a threat in restrooms.

Cooper's statements prompted Vampyre Cosmetics to terminate their partnership with the rock star, emphasizing their support for the LGBTQIA+ community and equitable healthcare access.
