Luka Doncic: Full preseason with Kyrie to boost chemistry

As the Dallas Mavericks began their training camp, Luka Doncic expressed optimism about improving his on-court chemistry with co-star Kyrie Irving, thanks to a full preseason.

Doncic acknowledged that last season, Irving joined the team mid-season, which didn't provide enough time for them to develop strong chemistry. He believes that having a full training camp and preseason this time around will significantly enhance their partnership on the court.

Dallas acquired Irving in a trade in February with the expectation that the eight-time All-Star guard would help elevate the Mavericks to contender status in the Western Conference. However, the team's results fell short of expectations as they finished 11th in the West and missed the playoffs.

Both Doncic and Irving dealt with injuries in the second half of the season, and the Mavericks struggled even when they played together, posting a 5-11 record in those games.

Despite the challenges, the Mavericks made re-signing Irving their top offseason priority, securing him with a three-year deal worth up to $126 million, including a player option for the final season, in the early hours of free agency.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd emphasized that there's already a relationship between Doncic and Irving, and their ability to coexist will largely depend on the surrounding pieces. He mentioned that the Mavericks had one of the league's best offenses when Doncic and Irving were on the floor together but struggled defensively, which hindered their playoff aspirations.

The team's general manager, Nico Harrison, pledged to upgrade the supporting cast around Doncic and Irving, focusing on adding intelligent, defensive-minded role players. Forward Grant Williams, acquired in a sign-and-trade deal with the Boston Celtics, is expected to join the starting lineup. Kidd also indicated that the team's rookie first-round picks, center Dereck Lively II and forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper, would have opportunities to earn immediate starting roles.

Doncic took responsibility for the team's defensive issues last season and stressed the importance of setting an example as leaders. He emphasized that he and Irving, as the team's leaders, need to set the tone for everyone and work together to improve their overall performance, both offensively and defensively.
