Clippers' Kawhi Leonard, Paul George entering camp 'fully healthy'

The LA Clippers are heading into their training camp in Hawaii with both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in "fully healthy" condition, according to Lawrence Frank, the team's president of basketball operations. Kawhi Leonard had been sidelined with a torn right meniscus and underwent surgery on June 6, while Paul George had been recovering from a right knee sprain that kept him out of the first round of the playoffs.

Frank expressed optimism about the upcoming season, noting that both star players have had productive offseasons and are committed to achieving success with the Clippers. He also mentioned that discussions have taken place regarding contract extensions for Leonard and George, who both have $48 million player options for the 2024-25 season and are eligible to sign four-year extensions worth up to $223 million each.

The Clippers are focused on maximizing the potential of their star duo and creating an environment where players want to stay with the team. They are entering a pivotal season, looking to prove themselves after injuries have disrupted Leonard and George's time together on the court.

Despite the lack of contract extensions for the star players and head coach Ty Lue, Frank emphasized that it's not a warning for the upcoming season but rather a matter of timing. He expressed the organization's desire to keep both Leonard and George with the Clippers.

Frank also mentioned that while the team has been linked to trade discussions involving James Harden, they are content with their current roster but will always explore ways to improve the team.

The Clippers' success this season will depend on the health of their star players, particularly Kawhi Leonard, who has expressed a desire to play when healthy. The NBA's new player participation policy, which limits the number of star players who can be unavailable for the same game, may influence how the Clippers manage back-to-back games. Frank stated that Leonard wants to play and will approach the season optimistically if he remains healthy, following a cautious approach in the previous season due to his ACL injury and other health issues.
