It's a rare occurrence for a Heisman Trophy recipient to meet the high expectations as an NFL prospect, but USC's Caleb Williams seems to be an exception to this trend.
Following his impressive 2022 performance that earned him another Heisman Trophy, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Williams is solidifying his position as the leading candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft with a series of impressive showings at the start of his junior season.
While the competition may not have been particularly strong, Williams' impressive statistics, including a 73.5 percent completion rate and a 9-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio, indicate that his game has reached a higher level compared to his 2022 season, during which he posted a 66.6 percent completion rate and a 42-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Additionally, Williams' average of 12.2 yards per pass attempt, up from 9.1 in 2021 and 2022, demonstrates that he has maintained his aggressive style while becoming a more efficient playmaker from the quarterback position.
Upon reviewing his performances against San Jose State and Nevada this season, it's clear that Williams makes the game appear effortless. He skillfully dissected the Spartans' defense with a variety of quick throws at short and intermediate distances. Williams' precision, whether in the pocket or on the move, allowed the Trojans to utilize quick passing plays and run-pass options (RPOs) to exploit the vulnerabilities in the Spartans' defensive schemes.
