Baker Mayfield seems to be engaged in two separate battles this summer. The quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is contending for the starting position against Kyle Trask. In addition to this, Mayfield is also embroiled in a dispute with family members regarding money that was lost, as reported by KXAN in Austin, Texas.
Mayfield, along with his wife Emily, filed a request in an Austin, Texas court on Tuesday to initiate depositions for a legal case against six companies. Notably, two of these companies, namely Camwood Capital Management Group LLC and Camwood Ventures LP, were established by Mayfield's father, James Mayfield.
The Mayfields are seeking these companies to furnish financial records spanning from 2018 to 2023. The aim is to uncover the whereabouts of approximately $12 million that they had invested in these companies. The couple is uncertain whether their funds were managed appropriately and competently, whether they were misappropriated, or if the situation falls somewhere in between, as per the details outlined in the request.
It's important to note that the submitted request is not a lawsuit in itself, although that potential outcome hinges on how the companies respond to this request.
Camwood Capital, the focal point of the potential legal action, has been responsible for managing Mayfield's finances and brand since his time at Oklahoma, as documented in a 2019 article by The Athletic.

Preserving their earned money is of utmost priority for Mayfield, who emphasized this sentiment in the mentioned article. He stated, "Protecting the money we’re earning is No. 1. I’ve always been one to save it. For me, it’s protecting the money by surrounding yourself with good people."
Mayfield's request is for financial records starting from 2018, the year he was drafted as the first overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Draft. After signing a four-year, $32 million contract with the Browns before his rookie season, he was later traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2022 due to limited productivity resulting from a shoulder injury in 2021. After a brief stint with the Panthers consisting of seven games, Mayfield was released. Subsequently, he joined the Los Angeles Rams, where he started four games towards the end of the season.
Following his free agency, Mayfield chose to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is currently in a competition with Kyle Trask, who had served as a backup to Tom Brady over the past two seasons. This ongoing contest is reaching its conclusion.
